Job Summary:

 

Plans and directs research and development activities for products by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Identifies, in conjunction with marketing and manufacturing, proposed new products and develops prototypes for evaluation to bring to market.

 

  • Communicates to senior management and board of directors overview of all products under development, and their stage of development.

 

  • Plans and formulates aspects of research and development proposals such as objective or purpose of project, applications that can be utilized from findings, costs of project.

 

  • Reviews and analyzes proposals submitted to determine if benefits derived and possible applications justify expenditures.

 

  • Approves and submits proposals considered feasible to management for consideration and allocation of funds or allocates funds from department budget.

 

  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects, such as preparation of records of expenditures and research findings, progress reports, and staff conferences, in order to inform management of current status of each project.

 

  • Negotiates collaborations with academia, government, and corporations.

 

  • Negotiates contracts with consulting firms to perform research studies.

 

  • Tracks industry trends, relevant legislation, and competitor activities.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Directly supervises one employee in the Product Application & Development. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

 

Required Skills:

 

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Excel, Word, Genisis, Outlook, PowerPoint, Pinnacle, and Oracle.

 

  • Creativity and hard work.

 

Required Training and Education:

 

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university plus minimum of 6 years of related work experience.

 

Required Work Experience:

 

  • Related work experience in research and development activities for products.

             

Working Environment:

 

  • A lab-working environment. The employee must do some occasional lifting and cleaning.
